Patients who spend large amounts of time in one position are at risk of developing pressure ulcers, or bedsores. The weight of the body puts pressure on areas that make the most contact with the bed or chair, cutting off blood supply to the skin and weakening it. These patients can also be more vulnerable to respiratory problems such as pneumonia, due to fluid buildup in the lungs caused by immobility. The Protekt (tm) Aire 7000 uses true low air loss and lateral rotation to solve these problems.
The low air loss feature circulates air across the mattress's surface and over the patient's skin to eliminate any buildup of moisture and heat, which can lead to pressure ulcers. The mattress's top sheet features three layers, so patient's and caregiver do not have to worry about air loss. The low shear and low friction top layer protects the patient's skin, and it is air permeable, allowing air to escape through the mattress. The middle layer provides a spacer for low air loss, and the bottom layer is water-resistant so it doesn't hold in moisture.
The lateral rotation function can turn the patient over up to 40 degrees in order to redistribute pressure. This repositioning of the patient relieves major pressure points on the body to prevent pressure ulcers from forming. Side bolsters at the edges of the mattress keep the patient safe from falling off the bed as they are turned. These bolsters can be deflated as needed for easier transfer in and out of bed, and to allow access to the patient for caregivers. While the lateral rotation feature is turned on, the low air loss still continues to effectively circulate air.
The Protekt (tm) Aire 7000 air pump has settings that can easily be customized for maximum patient comfort. The pressure is adjustable by ten levels from soft to firm, the lateral rotation can be turned on or off, and the angle and timing of rotation can be adjusted. A digital timer allows the patient to be rotated in intervals of 10, 20, 30, or 60 minutes. All of these settings can be easily adjusted with the user friendly control panel. Its LED display shows the current mode, rotation time, rotation angle, and pressure level. The pressure level in the mattress is constantly monitored by micro controller technology to ensure that the patient is safe and comfortable. If the air pressure falls too low, an alarm will sound to alert caregivers. The alarm also sounds in the event of a power outage. If the power does fail, solenoids in the pump can hold air to keep the mattress inflated. The pump's internal memory also stores any setting adjustments, which will resume as soon as power is restored. If needed, a lockout key can be used to access the control panel, allowing only authorized caregivers to change any settings on the pump. The Protekt (tm) Aire 7000 pump has a UL and CSA approved power cord and can support a 1,000 lb weight limit.
