Product Overview:

The BrailleCoach gives students unique vocal support when learning Braille. With an alphabet set of pre-programmed Braille tags, the BrailleCoach is useable right out of the box as a teaching and learning tool. Three modes of learning enhance progression through Grades 1 and 2 Braille as the student studies independently or in a classroom setting. When used along with a Braille writer, verbal messages will stimulate the process of learning the letters, dots and contracted words associated with Braille. By simply placing the prerecorded sound tag (with embossed Braille) on the activation area of the device, the student will hear the sound for the tag that is appropriate for the mode of use chosen. More details on the three modes are explained below.

More Information

The BrailleCoach uses tags to reinforce users understanding while learning Braille. Each embossed tag interacts with the user and BrailleCoach device to operate in three special modes of learning Braille. When the tag is placed over the sensor shown in images below, the user will hear the corresponding sound associated with the tag for the mode they've chosen. That sound may be letters, dots, or words. Further, you may customize blank tags for special words by recording a new sound with the included programming tags much the same as the ProxTalker device. After the tag has been customized, Braille can be added by the user with a labeler (not included).

  • In Mode 1: Letters and Dots, the mode will play the letter and the dot positions when a standard Braille Sound Tag is presented. This is to allow the user to learn the letter and its associated dot pattern. Having the dot pattern called out helps reinforce the tactile pattern.
  • In Mode 2: Letters Only, the mode only plays the letter name when the standard Braille Sound Tag is activated. This allows the user to try to recall the dot pattern without being reminded of it.
  • In Mode 3: Letters and Words, the mode introduces the user to Grade 2 Braille by playing the letter and its single letter contraction. Most Braille letters have a shorthand Grade 2 word associated with them but there are a few exceptions. The word is also printed out in full on the lower portion of the tag so the user can learn to read the entire word in Braille as well.
