The Platform Swing for Vestibular Therapy provides vestibular stimulation, helping to regulate movement and balance abilities. The vestibular system, which is located in the inner ear, detects motion and helps integrate the senses in order to prevent sensory overload meltdowns commonly experienced by clients with Sensory Processing Disorder.
Using the Platform Swing for Vestibular Therapy helps develop gross motor skills and posture, which both support visual development abilities, as well as auditory processing. By combining heavy work activities with the vestibular input through the swing's motion, the Platform Swing for Vestibular Therapy provides an ideal and versatile swing therapy solution that can be used in clinic, school, or home settings.
Activities Using the Platform Swing for Vestibular Therapy
For clients who have unstable posture and avoid taking their feet off of the ground because of gravitational insecurity, the therapist can direct the client to hang items from the upper wooden beams located at the top of the swing. This activity forces clients to move from a sitting to kneeling position while also experiencing instability on the swing. For more of a challenge, rotation or a swinging motion can be added. For more of a challenge, bean bags can be placed on the floor and the client will need to lie in a prone position to pick them up off the floor, then place the bean bags in a basket located at the top of the swing.
This activity helps with visual scanning, motor planning, and body-spatial awareness. Another activity involves a rope hanging from the ceiling with bean bags attached. The client can lie in a prone position while reaching for the rope and removing the attached bean bags. The bean bags can then be thrown into the corner of the room. This activity helps improve grip strength, bilateral integration/coordination, and timing in space. To help build up core flexion strength and impact higher level motor skills, the client can sit on the swing with their legs hanging down towards the floor. The client can use their feet to pick up the bean bags and throw the bean bags using the feet into the corner of the room.
