What is a Massage Table?

A massage table is a piece of specialized equipment used by aestheticians and massage therapists. It is a flat or an adjustable padded bench designed to accommodate an individual while receiving a massage, body or skin therapy treatment. A basic massage table is a rectangular padded bench attached to a set of legs, which can be adjustable allowing the user to adjust the height of the table for greater comfort. A massage table typically comes with a face cradle, or head rest, which is attachable to one end of the table to support the face while the individual is laying on the stomach.

Even though the basic design of a massage table is simple, there are many variations available. For example, some have special padding in certain areas for greater comfort. A massage table made for females may have a breast recess which allows a female to lie on the stomach without compressing the breasts uncomfortably. A massage table may also have matching bolsters to support various parts of the body during a massage session. Another type of massage table may have features to accommodate manicures and pedicures, such as arm rests, a faucet and drain, or a drain/fill hose. Still more features a table may offer are the ability to recline for relaxation, a reading light, or a mini side table to hold personal items during a treatment.

A massage table’s padding is normally covered in vinyl or another type of material which is easy to wash. The frame of the table may have cabinets or shelves to hold supplies, such as sheets, towels, pillows, or lotions for easy access.

How do I Choose a Massage Table?

The best massage table is durable and has compatible features that match the modality of its intended purpose. There are many materials to choose from and selecting the correct combination will ensure satisfaction with the table. Also, choosing the best table for the intended environment for its use is important. Most massage tables are made with hard wood, but some are made with steel frames, depending on the style. Another factor to consider is the specific procedures that will be performed on the surface. Some procedures need a fairly hard surface to be effective, while others employ a more padded top. Accessories available for a massage table vary, such as manicure or side arm rests, paper roll holders, table extenders, face rest platforms, and table warmers.
