What is a Hospital Bed?

A hospital bed is a specialized bed which has been designed to meet the needs of a healthcare environment, such as a nursing home, rehabilitation facility, hospital, or one day surgery center. It can also be utilized at home to care for those who need this type of bed. There are many features which distinguish it from a regular bed, but the most noticeable feature is that it is fully adjustable. A hospital bed can typically be adjusted in a variety of ways to support an individual’s back, make it easier to perform procedures, and for many other purposes. These adjustments can elevate the head and/or the feet for comfort, depending on the needs of the individual. Raising the head enables a person to eat and drink easier as well as improving breathing. Elevating the feet may be necessary for certain medical conditions, such as leg injuries or swelling.

A hospital bed also normally has rails to help prevent a person from rolling out of bed. The rails can be raised and lowered as needed for protection, comfort, or for transfers. Many beds have wheels in order to move the individual to a new location with minimal disturbance. A hospital bed can include a pole to hang intravenous fluids from, or to attach a trapeze so an individual can help move and adjust themselves. Many beds are height adjustable to assist a caregiver in medical treatment or to help an individual get in and out of bed easier, and most come standard with head and foot boards.

A full electric hospital bed includes the ability to raise and lower the bed electronically, as well as raise and lower the head and foot sections. This is initiated with a remote control operated by a caregiver or the individual. Some beds have side rails which are operated with a remote control, while others are raised and lowered manually. A semi electric hospital bed has a motor to raise and lower the entire bed, along with hand cranks to raise and lower the head and foot sections. A manual hospital bed is operated with hand cranks to raise and lower the entire bed and to raise and lower the head and foot sections.

Rehabmart is pleased to offer a comprehensive selection of superior quality hospital bed packages from esteemed and experienced medical vendors including Med-Mizer, Invacare Continuing Care Group, Drive Medical, and Independence Medical.
