What are Shampoo Basins and Hair Washing Trays?
Utilized in salons, long-term care facilities, hospitals and at home, shampoo basins and hair washing trays make this activity a whole lot simpler, convenient and comfortable. These products are used for people who are unable or too uncomfortable to have their hair washed by leaning backward to a sink, or for those who are bedridden and unable to ambulate to the bathroom and/or use the shower. While these devices will still require the assistance of a caregiver or hairstylist, they make it more comfortable for both the caregiver and the patient or client to attend to these hygienic and grooming needs.
What are the Benefits of Shampoo Basins and Hair Washing Trays?
Shampoo basins are available in a variety of styles to better suit individual requirements. As one of the most popular configurations, an inflatable shampoo/wash basin is designed specifically for washing the hair of those who are confined to bed. They are quick and easy to inflate, and take up about as much room as a pillow. Even though they are soft, they are innovatively designed to have internal walls that will keep the water from splashing, spilling or flowing out. When it is not in use, it can be emptied and deflated for easy storage or travel. In addition to hair washing, inflatable shampoo basins are often used for ear irrigation procedures, scalp treatments, and many other hygienic purposes.
Inflatable designs generally highlight a soft, built-in neck support for added comfort, and can usually be inflated by mouth. They often utilize internal water gathering systems, with a drain tube that runs from the basin to a drainage container, or into another section of the basin, which can then be emptied manually. Clean, unused water is stored in a bag that hangs above the basin (on a bedpost or IV pole) that can be dispensed through an included hand-held showerhead or stop-tip valve to control the flow of water. Most inflatable shampoo basins are also latex-free to prevent sensitivities or allergic reactions.
Hair washing trays, also known as shampoo trays or rinsing trays, are also available in a variety of designs to better fulfill the unique needs of each user. They are used for those confined to wheelchairs, or for those who are able to sit in a chair, but are unable to lean backward. Trays provide extra length to connect to the sink either by attaching to the back or top of the wheelchair (or chair), or by attaching to the shoulders and/or neck of the person being washed.
Shampoo trays allow the individuals being attended to stay sitting upright in their wheelchair or chair, without getting water and shampoo all over the place. They are specifically configured with raised and contoured edges to prevent water from splashing or flowing out, except directly into the sink. Some designs also feature rubberized edges for enhanced comfort and to prevent slippage. The over-the-shoulder designs often include comfortable, padded straps to keep the tray stabilized and in proper placement, along with special contours to better support the neck. Most hair washing trays are latex-free, and are easy to clean and maintain with regular household cleaning products. They are also quite compact for easy storage and travel.
