What is a Bedpan?
A bedpan is a portable bathroom aid which is used for those who cannot leave a bed to go to a standard toilet or toilet chair. It is commonly utilized for those with paralysis, women recovering from delivery after an epidural, and the elderly with conditions such as Parkinson’s, dementia, or any limited mobility issue. It is slipped underneath an individual’s genitals and rear to relieve themselves without having to rise out of bed.
A conventional bedpan is made from strong polypropylene, slightly contoured for comfort, and built to last. Some have what is called ‘pontoon’ sides to strengthen its stability along with a contoured wide seat. These types are easy to clean and reusable. Their recommended maximum weight capacity is 250 pounds.
A bariatric bedpan is made of heavy duty plastic with a weight capacity of up to 1,200 pounds. Some have a separator line in the bowl that keep the liquid apart from the solid waste, while others have a deep bowl to prevent spills.
A fracture bedpan has a tapered end for improved comfort and easy placement for immobile individuals. A built-in handle simplifies its placement and removal for those who cannot raise their body very high off of the bed surface. Some have an ID area for name, bed number and room number for those who share a room in a health facility. It is an ideal alternative for a female urinal and it has a weight capacity of up to 250 pounds. A bariatric fracture pan has a 900 pound weight capacity.
A stainless steel bedpan rack hold two bedpans with one on top of the other to prevent the risk of cross contamination. It resists corrosion, is easily disinfected, and mounts to any surface such as a bedside cabinet, the wall, or in a lavatory for convenience.
What is a Urinal?
A urinal holds an individual’s urine only, and most are designed for men. It is made of sturdy plastic with a wide stable base for easy positioning. Some have an anti-reflux system that will not spill the contents even if rolled completely over and others have a glow in the dark cover for easy finding in a dark room. Many include a large handle for holding and manipulating and for convenient hanging on a bed rail. Some are translucent plastic for visualizing the contents and measuring ease. A urinal is quick to empty and simple to clean with soap and water.
A male urinal kit is effective and ideal for those with partial incontinence, surge/overflow incontinence, and dribbling. It can be applied during the day to replace diapers and underpads and is a comfortable alternative to messy adhesives or multiple changes. The kit features a latex sheath, corset tie suspensory garment, straight through adaptor with a thumb clamp, standard drain valve, and leg bag adaptor for connecting the sheath to leg and drainage bags.
A female urinal has a larger opening for easy use and many are made with a specially designed spout to prevent leaks and spills once the urine is in the container. Some are transparent for easy measuring and visualizing the contents, can replace a bedpan for those with limited mobility, and can be utilized in many positions for comfort. Many include a large handle for easy manipulating and holding and for convenient hanging on a bed rail. It is quick to empty and simple to clean with soap and water.
A portable urinal is for men and women and can be thrown away after using. This makes it handy for in the car, home, or health care setting. Its pouch is puncture resistant so there is no worry about a mess when traveling. Also, it has an inner pouch filled with a biodegradable substance which stops bacterial growth and turns the liquid into a nontoxic, spill-proof, and waste disposal-safe gel.
