Ditch the Wheelchair and Leave Leg Braces Behind with the Freeloader Child Carrier!

Like many parents of young children, Erick Jansen faced a challenge: how could he bring his toddler along on day hikes, sightseeing trips, and even lengthy outings to the grocery store, without having to cut things short the moment she became tired and cranky?

As a firefighter and avid outdoor enthusiast, Jansen and fellow firefighter Nathan Jones set out to design a different kind of child carrier: one that would be an alternative to the clunky strollers and large, bulky child seats already available.

The result of one year of hard work and design refinement is the Freeloader Child Carrier: a lightweight, easy-to-use, portable and wearable seat that allows families to go hiking, exploring, and shopping with their youngsters - without, as Jansen says, “Packing our little ones in with our trail mix.”

What sets the Freeloader apart from other child carriers?

The Freeloader distinguishes itself from anything else designed for carrying young children in a number of ways! Here are a few of our favorites:

  • Lightweight and compact. At just 5.8 pounds, the Freeloader fits easily into a day pack or overhead airplane bin, and can be worn throughout the day without discomfort.
  • Supports up to 80 pounds. The industrial-strength hinge supporting the fold-up seat allows the Freeloader to hold between 25 and 80 pounds - more than any traditional child carrier!
  • 5-point child safety harness. Based on proven technology from popular hiking equipment, parachutes, and race cars, the Freeloader’s 5-point harness is positioned out of the reach of small hands to hold toddlers snugly and comfortably.
  • Take it absolutely anywhere! Unlike rolling strollers or hand-held child carriers that are cumbersome and only hold very small children, the Freeloader can carry a child across hiking trails, up mountains, through narrow aisles . . . absolutely anywhere!

Who would benefit from the Freeloader?

Parents of special needs children

Parents of children with spina bifida, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, cystic fibrosis, blindness, and other mobility challenges have used the Freeloader to expand their child’s world. The Freeloader opens up a whole new world to children with physical challenges, taking them places even the most advanced wheelchairs cannot. Parents have used the Freeloader to take their children hiking, hunting, mountain climbing - one parent even ran a 5K!

Parents with toddlers

Are you the parent of a toddler? The Freeloader will make life infinitely easier for any family raising a small child. The Freeloader is something you can wear in anticipation of that inevitable moment when your child ‘hits the wall,’ whether at the mall, on a day trip, at the airport, or even at outdoor sporting events when crowds are large and they want to be near you.

Four ways the Freeloader makes your life easier

Freeloader Picture

  • Where other child carriers can be bulky, straining the back and shoulders, the Freeloader uses ergonomic waist and shoulder straps to distribute weight evenly across the body’s hips and core, making it very similar in design to a high-quality backpack.
  • While many backpacks cause a sweaty back, the Freeloader’s breathable design helps to maximize airflow in snug places and keep your back cool and dry.
  • The Freeloader’s 5-point safety harness is purposely placed behind the child, so that a child cannot reach back and unbuckle themselves without warning.

"My 10-year-old Eric has an amazing wheelchair that can get him lots of places, but without a Freeloader he would never have been through the woods behind our house." -  Lloyd R., Freeloader website review

"'Wow' is all I can say about this company. We had a need and they delivered. Our daughter is paralyzed, and it was hard to take hikes. She has a (wheelchair), but it will not fit in narrow paths.
