What is a Recovery Couch?

A recovery couch is a simplified flat treatment table with padding that provides a comfortable space for resting, therapy and treatment. They are highly durable and able to withstand heavy and repeated usage for a variety of applications. Recovery couches are usually designed as either one or two piece systems. Two piece systems offer an adjustable or permanently fixed head section, and usually highlight an additional center leg for increased stability.

Recovery couches allow for further customization with the choice of storage options. Many designs offer shelving or cabinets under the table for additional storage, or construction without any storage is also available. Most recovery couches come with a wide selection of upholstery and color options, as well. To facilitate sanitation and proper hygienic practices, paper rolls and paper cutters are included with many recovery tables, or can be chosen as an option.

Several styles of recovery couches offer varied heights to better fit the practitioner or caregiver, and/or to provide easier access for patients to get on and off the couch. Eco-friendly choices are also procurable, constructed with wood that does not contain added urea-formaldehyde, resulting in safer indoor quality. Bariatric versions accommodate larger individuals safely, and feature even higher durability with their extra heavy-duty construction.

How are Recovery Couches Used?

Recovery couches are used for a wide range of medical, therapy and resting applications. Schools often employ them in school nurse offices for students who are feeling ill and need to lie down. Workplaces of every type often utilize recovery couches in this way, too. Aside from the resting aspect, they are often used to provide a comfortable place to administer first aid in schools and workplaces, as well.

As a less expensive option than a powered exam table, recovery couches commonly double as treatment tables in doctor’s offices, clinics and hospitals. They are also used extensively for athletics and sports, in training rooms and fitness centers. Massage therapists, physical therapists and occupational therapists often use recovery couches for the treatment of their patients and clients.

Recovery couches are often popular with health practitioners of every type because of their simplicity of design that lends itself to so many modalities. They are usually easy to assemble, and some types are lighter in weight so they are more portable, making them manageable to move from room to room. Their upholstery is no trouble to keep clean and maintain, and some models even offer antibacterial and antimicrobial materials to further reduce the risk of contamination and infection.
