What is a Bath Transfer Bench?

A bath transfer bench is a common mobility device used by those with physical disabilities, neuromuscular diseases, and other impairments in order to get in and out of a tub or shower safely. It normally has four or more legs with rubber tips to prevent slips, and there are a variety of seats and chairs available which can slide and/or swivel. A bath transfer bench is usually made of sturdy plastic with a rust-resistant aluminum metal frame, and is washable with mild, soapy water. And, the legs of a transfer bench are adjustable for height differences in a tub or shower. Part of the bench goes into the tub up against the far tub or shower wall, and the legs are adjusted so the bench is not touching the edge of the tub and is level.

The individual sits in the chair and slides across, and can then stay in the chair while bathing or showering. A transfer bench may have side arms to assist an individual in standing and sliding while others have safety straps to secure the individual in place. The sliding chair for the transfer bench is made from heavy fabric or sturdy plastic and slides along the bench for easy access. Some chairs combine the sliding with a swivel ability for easier transfers. Those with extremely limited mobility will need a caregiver to assist in the bathing and showering process, while wheelchair users can use the transfer bench themselves if able to lift their body from the wheelchair.

How do I Choose a Bath Transfer Bench?

When choosing a bath transfer bench, first consider the amount of room that is available in the bath area. Some benches are larger than others, therefore, checking on the dimensions is important. A transfer bench with handles for support is helpful for those children who are able to use the bench on their own. Some shower chairs are versatile in that they are designed to be used as an over-the-toilet commode, a bedside commode, and a roll-in shower chair. Others may have a reclining backrest to aid in the bathing process and for comfort, along with a fabric mesh cover that resists bacteria and fungi. All shower chairs should have sturdy casters allowing them to be rolled into a shower. Besides bathing, many bath transfer systems are used with the toilet for added safety and security. Some transfer frames are detachable to allow the individual to have privacy by closing the shower door or curtain. The weight capacity of most frames are up to 300 pounds.
