What are the Causes of Erectile Dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability to achieve or maintain an erection, and this health issue has many causes. The origins of this disorder can range from psychological conditions to physical issues, as well as many combinations of the two. To understand the underlying elements of erectile dysfunction can sometimes lead to treatment or cures.

Psychological reasons for erectile dysfunction can be complex and varied. Sometimes, simple stress over money, work, school, or other unrelated issues can make it all but impossible for a man to get or sustain an erection. Anxiety can also play a major role in ED, especially if the man involved is afraid of being thought of as insufficient or a failure if he cannot perform sexually. Previous instances of erectile dysfunction may increase anxiety and cause the condition to happen again. Also seen as common psychological causal factors for ED are depression and low self-esteem.

Physical causes of erectile dysfunction tend to be connected to a breakdown in the muscles, nerves, or veins that contribute to erectile ability. Nerve damage, such as that caused by neurological diseases, injury, or diabetes is believed to be a major contributing physical cause to instances of ED. Men with high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and other conditions that affect the function and behavior of blood vessels may also be more likely to experience ED on a regular basis. Also linked to the occurrence of ED is kidney disease.

It is not illnesses, in some cases, but the treatments for medical conditions that can be causes of erectile dysfunction. ED is often correlated with prostate cancer, mainly because treatments and surgery meant to cure this type of cancer can hinder erectile function. Drugs that alter the hormones may also cause ED, as well as many types of prescription medications.

Some lifestyle factors are believed to add to the occurrence of ED, such as heavy usage of alcohol or drugs. These may inhibit erections in acute situations, but chronic alcohol, drug, and tobacco use may also do permanent damage. Particularly related to tobacco addiction, hardening of the arteries is known to be a contributing cause of ED.

Most experts agree it is quite common for even healthy men to occasionally have the inability to get a sustained erection. Overexertion, stress, or a simple common cold may be enough to slow down normal function. If the condition appears to be worsening or happens at least 50% of the time, it may be helpful to seek professional treatment.

What are Erectile Dysfunction Pumps?

Erectile dysfunction pumps, also called vacuum constriction devices or penis pumps are used to help attain and maintain erections in men who are having problems with impotence. An ED pump consists of a tube which fits over the penis with one or more constriction bands. A hand pump or battery powered pump removes the air from the tube and creates a vacuum that forces blood into the penis. This causes an erection that can be maintained through the use of a constriction band at the base of the penis.

Vacuum erection devices can be helpful to those who experience erectile dysfunction because of diabetes, post-prostate surgery, or poor blood flow to the penis. These pumps, generally, are an effective ED treatment that is also cost-effective and non-invasive, unlike other ED treatments like implant surgery or medications. The pumps can also be used in conjunction with implants or medications.

The use of an ED pump is basically a simple process. First, the pump is placed on the penis, then the pump is used to force blood into the penis to create an erection. When the user slides the constriction band down to the base of the erect penis, the erection can be sustained for sexual intercourse.

There are some potential side effects with the use of erectile dysfunction pumps, such as the erection being purple or cold with some numbness. There can also be bruising at the base of the penis which is caused by the constriction band. Some users have reported that ED pumps make ejaculation difficult because the constriction band may prevent semen from being released. When this happens, the ejaculate can normally come out when the band is taken off.

Hand powered ED pumps are as effective in achieving erections as battery powered pumps. However, battery powered pumps may create an erection quicker and can be simpler to use for men who have limited hand strength. Sometimes, penis pumps are advertised for reasons other than achieving erections, such as increasing the girth and length of a penis. However, there is no medical evidence to support these claims, and doctors warn against using pumps for penis enlargement because overuse can potentially injure the penis.

Rehabmart is pleased to carry innovative and efficacious erectile dysfunction pumps from one of our esteemed medical vendors, Independence Medical.
