What is a Pediatric Bath Lift?
A pediatric bath lift is a battery operated seat that fits into a bathtub. It lowers a child into the bath water, then raises him out of the water when the bath is over. A child with mobility problems finds that using a bath lift gives him a feeling of independence as well as a feeling of safety and security. A bath lift is also helpful for the caregiver of a disabled child as lifting a child in and out of the tub can cause back issues. It additionally helps to eliminate slipping. Some bath lifts have a transfer area which is a platform or flap attached to the seat and looks like a small table top. This helps provide easier access in and out of the bath lift.
Since a bath lift is battery powered, it is important to choose one that will not allow the seat to lower unless the battery has enough charge to raise the lift back up. This prevents a child with limited mobility from being trapped in the bathtub. Comfort and safety should be the main considerations when selecting from the different models of bath lifts. A bath lift should have a padded backrest for comfort, and it should be sturdy whether it is a permanent style or a folding traveling type. Some bath lifts attach to the tub with suction cups, others are self-supporting. A folding bath lift is meant for travel and can usually be taken apart into two or three sections.
A reclining style bath lift allows a child more room to stretch out in the bathtub, and has controls that enable the child or caregiver to select the most comfortable position. A non-reclining bath lift limits the child to a sitting position with the legs stretched out. The battery pack and electrical cord should be waterproofed on a battery operated bath lift for safety.
What is a Freestanding Tub?
A freestanding tub is not built into the floor or a wall, but is an independent unit which can be moved around as one piece. It also allows the caregiver the ability to move around all sides of the tub for easy access to the child in the tub. It is designed to make bath time comfortable for a child, and its construction allows freedom to move around in. Its overall design should feature round, smooth edges and it may have a space saver area located under and/or around the tub. Also, the frame may be taken apart to make it easy to store and transport.
A freestanding tub can be adjustable in height to allow both standing and sitting for the caregiver while using the tub. It is helpful for the tub to have smooth running wheels so it is easy to move with or without water in it. Having a smooth surface enables the tub to be easy to clean. A bathing seat can be added for extra trunk support and freedom of movement for the child.
