Medline Industries, Incorporated, is the largest privately held national manufacturer and distributor of health care medical supplies and services. They were founded in 1910 when A.L. Mills bought a sewing machine and started making aprons for the Chicago stockyards in his Chicago home under the company name of Northwestern Garment Factory. During this time, nuns from a local hospital approached A.L. Mills to inquire about making surgeon’s gowns and nursing uniforms. Thus began the company's journey into the medical supply field.
During the 1930’s, A.L.’s son, Irving, assumed the business when the start of WWII created a large demand for medical supplies. At this time the company came to distribute general medical supplies as well as manufacturing various types of garments for the military and public.
During this time the company expanded and became the Mills Hospital Supply company. In 1966, the company officially incorporated and over the following years reaching into the 21st century, Medline Industries, Inc. is now a fourth generation family owned business with more than 14,000 employees, and offering over 350,000 different medical and surgical products to healthcare facilities and independent consumers around the world.
