Gel sheets are used to help soften and flatten a scar. They can be used on old or new hypertrophic (raised) scars. However, the scar must be completely healed with no open areas or scabs.
Refer to the enclosed Topigel sheet instructions to learn how to clean the Topigel sheets.
Application Instructions:
1. Cut a piece of gel sheet so that it extends about frac12;½½½½½½frac12;½½½½½½ beyond the raised scar.
2. Peel the adhesive from the gel sheet and place the sticky side on the scar.
3. Place compression garment or elastic bandage over gel sheet, being careful not to allow gel sheet to roll up.
4. Begin applying gel sheet for 4 hours per day for the first 2 days, and 8 hours per day for the next 2 days. Continue increasing the treatment time by 2 hours per day until the gel sheet is being worn 23 hours per day.
When you remove the compression garment to bathe, also remove the gel sheet.
5. Wash it in a mild soap and rinse in clean warm water. Pat it dry. Reapply with compression garment.
6. During warm weather or when sweating may occur, wash the gel sheet more often.
7. The gel sheet should last 10-14 days. It should be replaced when it begins to wear or when cleaning is difficult.
Precautions:
1. Do not use a gel sheet over an open wound or scab.
2. Do not wear while swimming or bathing.
3. Remove and discard if gel sheet becomes soiled.
4. If a rash develops, stop use of the gel sheet. Allow rash to completely disappear. Reapply gel sheet for only 2-3 hours at a time.
5. Continue increasing wearing time as stated in instructions.
6. If rash, irritation or swelling occurs, contact your Occupational Therapist or Physician as soon as possible.
