Difficulties and Hazards Associated with Standard Toilet Transfers:
Transferring from a wheelchair to toilet can be a difficult and unhygienic process. First, it is required to transfer off the front corner of the chair, making it difficult to jump across to the toilet seat. Then, the wheelchair user has to put their hands on the toilet seat and lift and slide their body across for the the transfer. Handicap accessible bathrooms do include grab bars, but they are positioned to the side and upward, which is not where they are needed to lift and scoot with the hands below the wheelchair bound person transferring. The flimsy toilet seat usually does not provide enough room for both the hands and the user's bottom, and the toilet seat is also prone to slipping sideways. Public toilet transfers usually provide no room for getting dressed and undressed. Moving back to the chair is just as difficult as moving to the toilet from the wheelchair.
How the Standard Toilet Transfer Bench Can Help:
The Standard Toilet Transfer Bench provides an ample amount of room for placing the hands and safely scooting over. This larger toilet surface area provides an ample amount of space for wheelchair users to support and readjust themselves. The increased space allows for correct hand placement for proper shifting of weight. Users can also lean from side to side to get undressed with this extra amount of space around the toilet seat.
