What is a mat table?

A mat table is an elevated platform that provides a safe stable surface where a patient can receive treatment or perform therapeutic exercises comfortably. They are designed for easy transfers by both ambulatory patients and those who use mobility devices.

Depending on the model, the table is constructed from wood, laminate or metal tubing. They have foam mats covered in vinyl or fabric averaging two inches in thickness. Some models may have motor-assisted height adjustment capabilities to allow the clinician to work in comfort. Other features may include adjustable back rests, extra width and bracing to accommodate bariatric patients, wall mounts to enable the table to be folded between uses to save space, and easy-to-clean finishes and removable mats to facilitate sanitation.

Unlike exam or massage tables, their wider surface and lower profile allow patients to perform a greater variety of exercises without the risk of falling off, as well as easier transitions from mobility devices to the mat.

Why are mat tables used?

They provide a comfortable, secure platform where patients may perform therapeutic exercises or receive treatments involving hot or cold packs as well as manual techniques including myofascial release, deep tissue massage, and joint manipulation and release along with stretching to enhance flexibility and range of motion.

Mat tables benefit the physical therapy staff as well as the patients. The table’s height lets them work on the patient at a level that supports proper body mechanics and prevents injury.

Who uses mat tables?

Physical therapists and their assistants use mat tables in the treatment of patients of all ages seeking pain relief, regaining or improving movement impacted by acute conditions such as recovery from surgery or injuries, congenital issues such as spina bifida, or chronic issues including arthritis, neuromuscular or musculoskeletal conditions such as MS, ALS, or muscular dystrophy. Treatments also prevent or slow the further deterioration of functioning caused by these issues to help enhance the quality of the patient’s life, allowing them to enjoy the maximum possible level of autonomy.

Where are mat tables used?

Mat tables are primarily used in hospital physical therapy departments and freestanding clinics, physical rehab centers and residential and day schools for special needs children. They may also be suitable for athletic training centers.

Rehabmart is proud to carry top quality mat tables by well-known manufacturers including Clinton, Hausmann and Armedica.
