Manual Hospital Beds

Manual Hospital Beds are comfortable medical beds that allow for the adjustment of the user’s height as well as head and knee elevation through the use of hand cranks as opposed to electrical equipment. The wireless nature of these beds allows them to be a cost-effective bedding option, as the lack of electrical equipment limits maintenance costs.

What are Manual Hospital Beds?

Manual Hospital Beds are cost-effective medical beds that offer the same adjustability as a standard electrical hospital bed without the use of electrical machinery. The overall height, as well as the elevation of the bed’s head and knee regions, can be adjusted through the use of hand cranks attached to the bed. These beds are particularly popular in home care and for patients who have the ability to adjust the bed through use of the hand cranks. Each bed offers comfortable support protected by a heavy-duty frame.

What are the advantages of Manual Hospital Beds?

By removing the electrical equipment used in standard hospital beds to adjust the user’s positioning, manual hospital beds are a cost-effective means of providing the same level of comfort with none of the risks of electrical failure, power loss and expensive maintenance. The manual hand crank system used to adjust these beds allows for the same level adjustment seen in standard electric beds, but at as much as half of the cost. Their affordable price coupled with the lack of energy costs make manual beds one of the most consumer-friendly hospital bed categories available.

How do I find the right Manual Hospital Bed for my needs?

Rehabmart is proud to offer a large selection of high-quality, customizable manual hospital beds from trusted manufacturers such as Drive Medical and Invacare. Each of these beds come with various railing and mattress options for customers to tailor the bed to meet their needs. The most commonly offered customization options include railings, mattresses, and transportation equipment.

Railing Needs
Manual hospital beds come with multiple options in railing, and understanding the benefits of each style of railing can be invaluable in the search for the ideal manual hospital bed. The three most common styles of railing are full-length railing, half-length railing, and four piece half-length railing.

Full-length railing involves a single line of railing on either side of the bed that reaches from the head region of the bed to the foot region of the bed with no gaps.

Half-length railing offers a railing that reaches from the head region to the waist region of the bed with no railing at the foot region of the bed.

Finally, four piece half-length railing offers four rails that cover the two upper and two lower quarters of the bed with a small gap in the railing at the waist region of the bed.

Mattress Needs
Most manual hospital beds offer at least one of three common mattress options: Spring, Foam, or Therapeutic mattresses.

Spring mattresses make use of a grid of steel coils to offer the user consistent, firm support.

Foam mattresses make use of a soft, spongy foam to offer the user an even distribution of support that accounts for the contours of the body.

Therapeutic mattresses—while the most expensive option—are also the most effective in combating user discomfort. These mattresses distribute pressure away from sensitive areas of the body and are the best option for preventing bed sores in bedridden users. Therapeutic mattresses are also temperature sensitive, adjusting to the user’s weight and body temperature.

Transportation Needs
For many customers, the ability to move their manual hospital bed is an essential need during homecare. For these customers, many manual hospital beds include an option for a bed transporter. These devices make the process of moving the bed and mattress simpler by providing a rolling platform on which the items can be transported with ease.
