What are Treatment Tables?
Treatment tables are specialized pieces of equipment used in medical examinations, treatment and therapy. They need to be comfortable as well as support the patient safely. Treatment tables can be adjusted manually to conform to the patient’s body for proper care, by raising or lowering various parts of the table. The movable elements of the tables should be constructed to avoid accidentally injuring a patient. Its design must also be easy to sterilize in order to keep the treatment area safe for patients and practitioners. Typically, the tables are covered with a fresh slipcover or sheet for every new patient to avoid transferring germs between patients.
Some treatment tables can support up to 500 pounds under normal use. They can have hydraulic cylinders built into each of the four table legs, allowing the table to have adjustable height. This type should have a hands-free foot control to allow better access in guiding the patients as they are transferred to the table. Portable treatment tables are convenient for sideline treatments, evaluations, and other interventions to be performed on site by athletic trainers or sports therapists.
Options that are available with some treatment tables are a storage shelf, drawers, or enclosed cabinets. The tables may come in all steel or wood construction. Space saver treatment tables have a drop-down foot rest for smaller rooms when not in use.
How do I Prevent Falling While on a Treatment Table?
It is very important to stay on the treatment table to prevent falling. Try to bring someone along to stay near the table if assistance is needed. Do not try to get off a treatment table with no one around. When getting up from a prone position, always sit at the side of the exam table for a few minutes before standing up. If you’re normally using a walker or cane to aid in getting around, bring it and use it while receiving treatment. Let someone know if you experience dizziness or weakness.
