Birch Transfer Board with Tapered Ends

Also referred to as a slide board, the Birch Transfer Board with Tapered Ends is an essential accessory for wheelchair users. The tapered ends create an incline and decline that assists with making the transfer an easy and comfortable process. Patients can transfer independently or with the help of a caregiver using the Birch Transfer Board.

How to Transfer from Bed to Wheelchair Using the Birch Transfer Board with Tapered Ends
First, the person transferring will start with sitting up position with their feet on the floor. They will lean forward just enough so their body will not slide on the board, and they can instead catch a little air under the bottom. The person transferring will look and lean to the right side, while the person assisting with the transfer will place their hands under the wheelchair users bottom and position one part of the board under the left side and the other part of the board on the wheelchair.

One third of the transfer board will rest under the bottom, one third will be between the wheelchair and chair, and the other part will rest on the wheelchair. The patient will then lean forward and look to the right while the patient, assisted by the caretaker, lifts up and onto the Birch Transfer Board. The patient can then shift themselves up and into the wheelchair. Once in the wheelchair, the transfer board can be pulled out from under the patient.
