The Importance of Eye Care

Caring for your eyes is important, and being concerned with vision is just as crucial as maintaining general physical health and deserves the same attention. Vision loss can result when a disease has established a stronghold, or an injury occurs to the eyes, and continued maintenance and routine eye appointments are highly recommended. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, some guidelines for scheduling routine eye appointments are for people 39 years old and under scheduling an eye exam every two to four years if there aren’t any noticeable vision problems occurring. For people 40 to 64 years old, an eye exam should be scheduled every two years, and after the age of 65, an annual or bi-annual eye exam should be scheduled. If there are any vision loss or atypical symptoms, or pain with the eyes, the affected individual should visit an eye care professional for possible treatment, or for proper maintenance comprehension and patient compliance.

Eyepatch – An eyepatch or eye pad is an eye-sized soft or hard patch that is placed and worn in front of one eye, and is usually attached around the head by an elastic band or as an adhesive device that is worn or clipped onto a the lens of a pair of glasses. An eye patch can be worn to cover an injured or lost eye, or be used as a therapeutic device for children in the treatment of amblyopia as an orthoptic management device for children at risk of “lazy eye”.

Eye Drop Guide – A device that snaps onto an eye drop bottle and is placed resting directly over the eye, keeping the eye open and accurately depositing the eye drops directly into the eye.

Eye Wash Bottle – Used as an easy and quick way of flushing the eyes with a saline solution to help physically wash the eyes of contaminated foreign substances or materials.

Artificial Tears – Lubricant eye drops used to treat irritation and dryness associated with deficient tear production, and is also utilized to moisten contact lenses, and in eye examinations. Although lacking proteins found in natural tears, artificial tears do contain water, salts and polymers to provide temporary relief from “dry eyes”.

Amsler Grid – An ophthalmological tool used to detect vision problems resulting from macula damage (macular degeneration), or of the optic nerve. The use of the grid is to note any changes of the patient’s vision during an eye exam by covering one eye and locating a black dot in the center of a checkered grid. The doctor evaluates patients by how they see the grid lines; straight, wavy or missing.
