The neck, upper back, and lower back contain curves that counterbalance each other in order to balance the force of the head with minimal muscle energy. Car accidents, looking down for long periods of time during cell phone use, sitting too much because of mobility issues or work environment, and aging are all common incidents that may cause the curves to straighten. Losing this curve, a condition known as cervical kyphosis, causes the head to no longer sit balanced on top of the spine, which throws the whole body off balance. This condition causes neck pain, headaches, reduced range of motion, weakness in the arms and legs, loss of grip strength, difficulty walking, difficulty with the bladder and bowels, and issues with the ear canal lining up with the spine.
Other conditions such as progressive thoracic kyphosis cause the foundation for the cervical spine to tilt forward, forcing the head to translate to the anterior. This causes weight bearing stress on the upper thoracic spine, which in turn progresses the kyphosis over time. Combined with osteoporosis in the elderly, spontaneous anterior compression fractures in the thoracic spine may occur.
The Anterior Head Support can be used to keep the head upright and balanced on the spine, preventing it from falling forward. When the head sits evenly on the spine, blood flow to the brain is encouraged and those with degraded posture are able to keep their eyes level with their visual environment. The Anterior Head Support provides rest for neck and spine muscles, helping to reduce the fatigue and strain that also causes headaches.
Included with the Anterior Head Support are soft cloth covers for added protection of the skin.
While providing supplemental support to those with positioning needs, the Anterior Head Support is not designed (and should not be used for or with) to be attached or mounted in any way to a seat or a headrest.
