More Information

What is IPPB Therapy
Intermittent Positive Pressure Breathing (IPPB), also called "The Bird," is a mechanical respirator that helps patients take deep breaths when they are too weak, fatigued, or drowsy to take them on their own. Using the device may cause coughing, which helps clear saliva and mucus (commonly present during infections) from the lungs. Delivering a controlled pressure of gas, the lungs are ventilated or expanded when IPPB is administered, and tidal volume is increased.

Why is IPPB Therapy Needed?
When patients are unable to take deep breaths due to the above mentioned conditions, muscles become tired and the waste gas carbon monoxide builds up because not enough oxygen is able to reach the blood, and coughing becomes too difficult to expel mucus and saliva in the lungs. Using IPPB Therapy increases the volume of breath, improves oxygen levels, supports weak inspiratory muscles, assists in the delivery of aerosol medications, and expels sputum from the lungs.

Conditions that IPPB Therapy Treats
IPPB is a useful treatment for many different pulmonary conditions. Those with neuromuscular disorders and kyphoscoliosis, a deformity of the spine that causes abnormal curvature of the vertebrae column in the coronal and sagittal planes, are at risk of respiratory complications such as pneumonia and chronic atelectasis, or lung collapse. When part or all of the lung collapses due to blockage in the air passages or from pressure on the outside of the lung, IPPB can be utilized if other treatments such as postural drainage and aerosol therapy are not effective. These patients may experience pulmonary hypertension (high blood pressure in the lungs). Acute severe bronchospasms and those with COPD are given IPPB Therapy after failing to respond to standard therapy. IPPB can be used on post-surgery and trauma patients may have trouble breathing in, due to pain.
