Headquartered in High Point, North Carolina, Amtryke, LLC, is entirely operated by National AMBUCS, Inc., a national nonprofit (501c3) charity committed to “creating mobility and independence for people with disabilities”. Founded in 1922 by William L. White, AMBUCS began its foray into special needs tricycle manufacture in the 1990s.
As a practicing pediatric physical therapist in the early 90s, Sue Haywood found herself frustrated with the high cost of adaptive tricycles available at that time. She was able to afford one such trike, and let her young patients borrow it for a week at a time. Because she witnessed such a positive difference in muscle tone, strength and the boost to self-confidence that this trike inspired, she wondered how much quicker these results could transpire if all of her patients could enjoy access to a tricycle of their own, ALL the time.
Through the expression of this idea to her local AMBUCS chapter, Gene Allen, another AMBUCS member, quickly volunteered his services and the use of his small fabrication shop. It didn’t take long for other chapter members to regularly volunteer their skills and time to build more of these adaptive tricycles, which were first given to Sue’s pediatric patients, and then to other children with special needs in their local community.
The trike project grew so rapidly that the National AMBUCS organization voted to include this Amtryke Program as a nationwide project at their conference in 1995, and it has been a perfect fit ever since.
With their belief that “the fun and freedom of riding your own bike is something everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy”, Amtryke offers a wide variety of triking selections for a myriad of abilities. Their therapeutic tricycles are specifically designed to accommodate riders of all ages, with physical or developmental challenges.
Comprising hand trikes, foot trikes and both hand/foot trikes in classic and recumbent styles, Amtryke’s therapeutic tricycles are available in a range of sizes to fit every rider, with adjustment capabilities and adaptive accessories to customize the trike to the user’s special requirements.
